Newly Graduated Design Engineer Helping UK Businesses Build Beautiful Websites — Here's My Recent Work

Hey everyone! I'm super excited to share some of my recent website design work with you all. As a newly graduated Design Engineer, I've been diving headfirst into the world of web design, and I'm absolutely loving it. My passion lies in creating visually stunning and user-friendly websites that not only look great but also help UK businesses thrive online. I believe a website is more than just a digital brochure; it's a crucial tool for brand building, customer engagement, and ultimately, driving business growth. I've been fortunate enough to collaborate with some fantastic clients across various industries, and I'm incredibly proud of the results we've achieved together. So, let's dive into some of my recent projects and see how I've helped these UK businesses elevate their online presence!

Project 1: Revamping a Local Bakery's Online Presence

One of my favorite projects involved completely overhauling the website for a beloved local bakery. The bakery, known for its delicious pastries and friendly service, wanted a website that reflected its warm and inviting atmosphere. The existing website was outdated, clunky, and didn't showcase the bakery's products in the best light. My goal was to create a visually appealing, easy-to-navigate website that would entice customers and encourage them to visit the bakery or place online orders. This project was particularly exciting because I had the opportunity to translate the bakery's offline charm into an online experience. This is a very important part of the process, understanding the clients' needs and how to reflect them into the website. The design phase began with a deep dive into the bakery's brand identity. We looked at their logo, colors, and overall aesthetic to ensure the website design aligned perfectly. I wanted the website to feel welcoming and inviting, just like the bakery itself. We used warm colors, high-quality photos of their delicious pastries, and a user-friendly layout that made it easy for customers to browse the menu, learn about the bakery's story, and find out where they were located. During the design phase, I created several mockups and wireframes to visualize the website's structure and layout. We also made sure to include responsive design, which is important because a lot of people are using mobile phones to browse, and the website must look great on every device. This involved tailoring the website's appearance and functionality to various screen sizes and devices. I meticulously designed the website to be fully responsive, ensuring it looked perfect on desktops, tablets, and smartphones.

We were really happy with the website's responsiveness, the client as well. We focused on high-quality images of the pastries, clear calls-to-action, and a seamless online ordering system. We also integrated a blog to share bakery news, recipes, and behind-the-scenes content, which boosted user engagement and improved search engine optimization (SEO). The client was over the moon with the final product. The new website not only looked fantastic but also generated a significant increase in online orders and foot traffic. We've seen a lot of new visitors to their website, which brought the bakery lots of new business. It was a win-win situation. Working with this bakery reminded me how important it is to support local businesses and help them thrive. It's a good feeling to know that my design work is making a tangible difference in the community.

Project 2: Building an E-commerce Platform for a Sustainable Fashion Brand

Another exciting project involved creating an e-commerce platform for a sustainable fashion brand. The brand was committed to ethical sourcing, eco-friendly materials, and transparent practices. Their mission was to create a website that reflected their values and provided a seamless shopping experience for their customers. This project was a bit more complex than the bakery's website, as it involved integrating e-commerce functionality, payment gateways, and inventory management systems. I worked closely with the brand to understand their specific requirements and create a website that met their needs. We put the emphasis on user experience. The overall feel of the website needed to reflect the brand's values and aesthetics. We used natural colors, minimalist design, and high-quality product photography to showcase the clothing in the best light. The user experience was really important, so we focused on creating a clean and intuitive website layout. Customers could easily browse products, add items to their cart, and complete their purchases. We also integrated secure payment gateways to ensure safe and reliable transactions.

Additionally, we implemented features like product filtering, size guides, and customer reviews to enhance the shopping experience. The brand also wanted to incorporate storytelling into the website. We did this by creating dedicated pages that highlighted their commitment to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and their brand story. This helped build trust with customers and differentiate the brand from its competitors. Building the e-commerce platform was a challenging but rewarding experience. I learned a lot about the technical aspects of e-commerce, including payment processing, shipping integrations, and inventory management. At the end, the brand was super happy with the final product. They saw a significant increase in sales and customer engagement. They were also very pleased with the way the website reflected their brand values and mission. This project was a great example of how good design can support a good cause. I'm always looking for new clients and projects, so I would be happy to help someone else.

Project 3: Designing a Modern Website for a Tech Startup

I also had the pleasure of working with a tech startup, helping them build a modern and engaging website. The startup was developing a new software product and needed a website that would showcase their product's features, attract potential investors, and generate leads. This project required a different approach than the previous two. It focused on creating a clean, modern design that was both informative and visually appealing. I began by understanding the startup's target audience, their product, and their brand identity. This allowed me to create a website that resonated with their audience and effectively communicated their value proposition. The design was all about simplicity, clean lines, and a focus on the product's key features. We used bold typography, high-quality visuals, and interactive elements to create an engaging user experience. I also integrated clear calls-to-action, such as “Request a Demo” and “Sign Up for a Free Trial,” to encourage visitors to convert into leads. The website had to be easy to navigate and have the necessary information. This included information about the product's features, pricing, and benefits.

We wanted to make it easy for potential investors to learn about the startup, so we included a dedicated investor relations section. We also built a blog section to share industry news, thought leadership content, and company updates. The website was designed to be fully responsive, so it looked great on all devices. This was essential for reaching a wide audience and ensuring a seamless user experience. During the design phase, I created several mockups and wireframes to visualize the website's structure and layout. I collaborated closely with the startup's team to gather feedback and make revisions until we were all happy with the final product. The website went live, and the tech startup was very pleased with the results. The website has helped attract more visitors, generate leads, and secure investment. The website was well-received and contributed to the startup's success. This project taught me the importance of understanding the needs of each client and tailoring the design to their specific goals and objectives. I am always learning new stuff. This project was a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of web design and the importance of staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies.

My Design Philosophy and Approach

My design philosophy is centered on creating user-centered designs that are both visually appealing and highly functional. I believe that a successful website should be more than just a pretty face; it should provide a positive user experience, effectively communicate the brand's message, and ultimately help the business achieve its goals. I am always looking for new challenges, to help my clients. When I start a new project, I always begin by getting to know the client. I want to learn about their business, their target audience, and their goals for the website. This helps me create a design that is tailored to their specific needs and objectives.

I use the following approach:

  • Research and Discovery: I start by researching the client's industry, target audience, and competitors. This helps me understand the landscape and identify opportunities for differentiation.
  • Planning and Strategy: I then work with the client to define the website's goals, target audience, and key performance indicators (KPIs). I also develop a sitemap and content strategy to ensure the website is well-organized and informative.
  • Design and Development: Once the plan is in place, I start designing the website. This involves creating wireframes, mockups, and prototypes. I also use responsive design principles to ensure the website looks great on all devices.
  • Testing and Launch: Before launching the website, I thoroughly test it on different devices and browsers. This helps me identify and fix any bugs or issues. Once everything is perfect, I launch the website and provide ongoing support and maintenance.

My favorite tool is Adobe XD. I use it in all my projects, and it helps me in all phases. I am also very familiar with other design tools like Figma, Sketch, and the Adobe Creative Suite. I'm also proficient in front-end development languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which helps me create custom designs that meet my clients' specific needs. This also means that I can work more efficiently and reduce the amount of time spent on a project. I strive to deliver high-quality work, within budget and on time.
